Join Christchurch PACT and make sure you’re ‘safe to scoot’
Next week, mobility scooter users in Christchurch have the opportunity to receive advice and guidance to ensure the safety of themselves, other road users and pedestrians in the town.

On Wednesday 9 March 2011, two ‘Safe Scoot’ sessions will be held in Christchurch after concerns were raised through the PACT (Partners and Communities Together) process about mobility scooter users and their safety. Each session will help convey the dangers the elderly and disabled face when using the vehicles.

The sessions, held by Christchurch Town Centre PACT will also serve to help increase users’ confidence.

Session one will take place between 10am and 12noon and will be held at Homelands Hall. Session 2 will be held between 2 and 4pm at Priory Hall.

The ‘one-stop’ day, was devised in partnership with Dorset Police, Christchurch Borough Council, and Trading Standards.

PC Dave Williams, from Christchurch Town Centre Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “Mobility scooters are becoming extremely popular in Christchurch and the safety of the users, pedestrians and other vehicles is of huge importance.

“As the weather improves more and more users will venture out onto the towns’ roads and streets. If you own or are considering purchasing a mobility scooter then please do come along.

“We would also like to thank ‘The co-operative funeralcare’ for their support in organising the event.”

On the day those in attendance will be able to test their mobility scooter skills and knowledge to win some valuable prizes.

Careers Support in Christchurch

Free Support for Carers in Christchurch

Local charity Help and Care is working in partnership with Dorset County Council to provide free information and support sessions for carers in Christchurch.

The sessions will be held at the Stour Surgery, Christchurch and take place on 15, 22, 29 March and 5 April 2011 from 10am – 1pm. Carers attending will be provided with a free lunch at the end of each session.

Carers are unpaid relatives, friends or neighbours who provide support and care to a partner, child, relative, friend or neighbour who could not manage without their help. Every year thousands of carers in Dorset provide help to ill, frail and disabled people but many are not aware of the advice and support available to them.

The information and support sessions cover a variety of topics including: local support to help carers in their caring role, legal information about caring, how to cope with stress, carers’ benefits and relaxation techniques.

Carers in Christchurch interested in attending the sessions should call Help and Care on 0300 111 3303 to book a place.

Gary Finch from the Carers Outreach Team at Help and Care said: “The session will equip carers with valuable information and advice. It’s a great opportunity for carers from Christchurch to meet and talk to one another and share experiences with an understanding caring group of people.”

Carers who feel they need someone to sit with their cared for person while they attend the course can contact Help and Care for information about the support available.
